Short Description
The Grow Your Own Teacher Initiative funds 11 consortia throughout the state to recruit and support local community members who desire to become teachers in hard-to-staff neighborhood schools. As a condition of the teacher candidate's award, recipients agree to accept a teaching position in a hard-to-staff
school for a period of five years after obtaining a state teaching certificate. Consortia members provide financial, educational and other supports to candidates through the GYO grant. The consortia are comprised of community organizations, school districts, community colleges, and four-year institutions of higher education.

Objectives and Goals
To effectively recruit and prepare parent, community leaders and paraeducators to become effective teachers statewide in hard-to-staff schools serving a substantial percentage of
low-income students and hard-to-staff teaching positions in schools serving a substantial percentage of low-income students. Further, the Initiative shall increase the diversity of teachers, including diversity based on race and ethnicity.

Eligibility Requirements
IBHE shall award grants to qualified consortia that reflect the distribution and diversity of hard-to-staff
schools and hard-to-staff positions across this State. In awarding grants, the Board of Higher Education State Board shall select programs that successfully address Initiative criteria and that reflect a diversity of strategies in terms of serving urban areas, serving rural areas, the nature of the participating institutions of higher education, and the nature of hard-to-staff schools and hard-to-staff teaching positions on which a program is focused. The consortia must meet the following requirements:

A consortium shall be composed of at least one 4-year institution of higher education with an Illinois
approved teacher preparation program, at least one school district or group of schools, and one or more community organizations. The consortium membership may also include a 2-year institution of higher education, a school employee union, or a regional office of education.

Application and Award Processing
Applicants must complete and mail the the renewal application and attachments to the IBHE office by the deadline. Applications will be scored by a peer review team chosen by the IBHE according to a 100 point rating scale as outlined in the RFP.
Assistance Consideration
In-Kind Institutional Funds

Consortia should report any in-kind or matching institutional or consortia funds used to support the consortia. This may include fiscal services provided by an institution, student support services provided by an institution but not paid with state GYO grant funds.

External Funds

Consortia should report any external support to the consortia. This may include funds from foundations or funds raised by a bake sale, a private granting agency, and/or other federal granting sources.
Post Assistance Requirements
Reporting requirements include:
- Quarterly reporting using the IBHE online system,
- Quarterly updating candidate information in the IBHE online system,
