Short Description
The Federal Senior Companion Program (SCP) was authorized under the Domestic Volunteer Service Act in 1973. By 1974, 18 model Senior Companion projects were funded. Under this program, providers can apply directly to Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) for a federally funded grant to operate their programs. Historically, the Department on Aging has issued a one-time annual grant award to providers who received the CNCS grant to defray costs associated with a required match that is borne by the CNCS grant recipient. There is no guarantee that the Department will continue to provide these grants for the federal match program, and the amount varies from year to year dependent upon available appropriations.
