Objectives and Goals
To improve safety at local agency railroad/highway crossings by installing new warning devices; upgrading existing warning devises , incentives for voluntary closures, and other related rail/highway safety improvements.

Local public highway authorities and railroad companies are eligible to apply.

Application and Award Processing
IDOT solicits potential projects from railroad companies and local public agencies each year. Awards are based on IDOT's evaluation of projects with consideration given to physical conditions, crash history, change in train or vehicular volume, etc. A prioritized list is then submitted for inclusion in IDOT's annual program.
Assistance Consideration
Federal funds are available at 90% of project costs.
