Short Description
The purpose of this line item is to provide administrative funds for all Regional Offices of Education and the North Cook Intermediate Service Center in order to facilitate mandated school bus driver training.

105 ILCS 5/3-14.23 mandates that courses be conducted for school bus drivers pursuant to standards provided in the Illinois Vehicle Code in Section 6-106.1. Each school bus driver must attend an 8 –hour initial training course and then an annual 2-hour refresher course in order to be properly permitted by the Illinois Secretary of State and operate a school bus per Section 6-104(d) of the Vehicle Code.

Eligibility Requirements
Regional Offices of Education and the North Cook Intermediate Service Center, which provide training for all school bus drivers who need to be issued a new permit or who need to renew their permit, are eligible.

Application and Award Processing
Each regional office and the North Cook Intermediate Service Center is provided a base amount of $1,000 per office with the remaining amount distributed on a per driver basis that is computed from the number of drivers trained by each office for initial and refresher courses between July 1 and June 30 of each year. A single payment is processed shortly after the beginning of the fiscal year.
